A New Season Ahead – News and Updates for Parents, Coaches and Players

Here’s an update for everyone about preparations for the Term 1 season, starting the week of February 5.

Graded Junior Teams

With registrations now closed we are currently putting together the graded teams for Under 10s Mixed, Under 12s and Under 14s Boys, and Under 13s and Under 17s Girls.

We plan to have that process complete over the weekend and will release teams for parents, players and coaches early the week beginning Monday Jan. 22.

Keep an eye on BDABA facebook and the website (bdaba.com.au) for that.

All Other Teams

Delegates have registered teams for the Under 16s, Under 18s and Men’s and Women’s competitions.

Players must now register with the team link sent to their delegate.

Only players that have registered will be able to take the court.

Please register before Sunday, Feb. 4 to avoid having to sit out Week 1.

Transition 10s

Parents that registered a player born in 2015 or younger will be asked via email (please keep an eye on the email you gave us when registering your player) whether they would prefer for their child to play in the Transition 10s (for new players still learning the basic skills) or the regular Under 10s competition.

We will also seek feedback from last year’s Transition 10s coaches about which players from last season are ready to go up.

After the first weeks of the Term 1 season, we’ll take a look at any players that might need to switch from T10s to Under 10s, or vice versa.

Player Movement – Graded Junior Divisions

All parents, players and coaches are reminded that, to rebalance graded teams, players may be moved between teams in the first 3 weeks of the competition.

This is a normal and healthy part of the competition designed to help provide accurate evaluation of players and keep the graded competitions as fair and even as possible.

In the event of players leaving the comp, continued lopsided games etc, the committee reserves the right to move players later in the season if absolutely necessary.

Our goal will, however, be to keep player movement to a minimum.

The scheduling and timing of games will be much the same as last year.

Playing Jerseys

We’re in the process of organising the playing jerseys for the Term 1 season.

Our Competitions Coordinator will connect with coaches and delegates prior to the start of the season to make sure all teams have jerseys.

We do still need to collect some jerseys from last season!

You can drop them off at the BARC this Saturday Jan. 20 and next Saturday Jan. 27 between 10am and 12pm.  Look for the pink tub near the entrance to the courts.

If you have any questions about jerseys, please email competitions@bairnsdalebasketball.com.au

Welcome New Coaches

We’ve had a terrific response from parents, players and supporters interested in joining the coaching ranks in 2024.

Thank you to those new coaches, and to our existing coaches that continue to support our kids and the competition.

(If you’d like to register your interest in coaching, here’s the info you need: https://bdaba.com.au/wanted-more-junior-coaches-in-2024/)

We’re hosting a very informal “meet and greet” Orientation Session for new coaches at the BARC this Saturday morning from 10 – 11am.

Existing and experienced coaches are encouraged to attend too!

The goal of this get-together is just to welcome and thank coaches for putting their hands up, provide some basic information and guidance, and for the coaches to meet each other.

One thing we are really focusing on this year is finding new ways for coaches to work together and for novice coaches to learn from the more experienced coaches in our community.

Open Training Sessions and Pre-Game Drills

Our Coaching Subcommittee is in the process of scheduling a series of open training sessions at the BARC on weekends during the Term 1 season.

These will be hosted by our more experienced coaches and will be open to all domestic players.

We hope to be able to provide separate sessions for different age groups, but this will depend on the number of coaches willing to host a session.

We’ll provide more information about those open training sessions in the coming weeks.

To make sure our junior players are learning the foundational skills they need, for the first few weeks of the Term 1 season we are going to try running a short, coordinated drill for all players a few minutes prior to tipoff of Under 10s and Under 12s games.

This will also help new coaches learn about key basketball drills and how experienced coaches run them.

Games will be shortened by just a few minutes to accommodate this.

We’ll see how it goes in those first few weeks, and will evaluate whether to continue for the remainder of the season.
