What is the Pilot Program?
The Pilot Program is a three-week trial competition designed to gauge interest in basketball formats that are not currently offered as part of our regular competition calendar.
Many of these competitions are popular in other basketball associations, and this pilot will help us determine whether there is enough community interest to:
- Incorporate them into our regular competitions, or
- Run them as a dedicated short season each year.
As this is the first time we have offered many of these competitions, your participation and feedback will help shape future competitions.
Frequently Asked Questions:
This FAQ covers the questions we expect to be asked most often.
If you have a question that isn’t answered below, please email vicepresident@bairnsdalebasketball.com.au.
We’ll be happy to help, and if your question is one that others may have, we’ll add it to this FAQ.
As this is our first year running the Pilot Program, we appreciate your patience as we work through the finer details of these new competitions.
When will the Pilot Program run?
The Pilot Program will run over three weeks, commencing Tuesday 1 September.
Games will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at the Bairnsdale Aquatic & Recreation Centre (BARC).
Please note that one week of the program falls during the school holidays.

I don’t have a team but would like to play.
No problem!
If you’re interested in participating but don’t have a team, complete the Wait List Form and let us know which competition you’d like to play in.
We’ll do our best to place you into a team if a suitable opportunity becomes available. While we can’t guarantee placement, we’ll make every effort to match individual players with teams looking for additional players.
Why are the age groups for 3×3 different from our regular competitions?
We wanted to offer something a little different while also helping players prepare for the upcoming Summer season.
For example:
If you’re currently a top-age Under 12 player, you’ll move into Under 14s for Summer. Our Under 13 3×3 competition allows you to play against the players you’ll likely compete with next season, helping make that transition a little easier.
How many players can I have in my 3×3 team?
Games are short and fast-paced, so we recommend teams of four players.
This provides a substitute if someone is injured, sick or unavailable.
We don’t recommend having more than five players, as this may reduce everyone’s court time.
What is Walking Basketball?
Walking Basketball is a low-impact, social version of basketball designed for people who may no longer be able to participate in traditional competitive basketball.
Suitable for participants of all ages and abilities, the game removes:
- Running
- Jumping
- Fast breaks
to create a fun, safe and inclusive environment while still enjoying the game of basketball.
It is a fantastic way to stay active, improve fitness and enjoy the social side of basketball.
What are the rules for Walking Basketball and 3×3?

The official competition rules will be published soon.
Once available, they will be included on the registration page and our website.
What is D Grade Men’s & Women’s Basketball?
D Grade is designed for:
- New basketball players
- People returning after many years away from the game
- Anyone wanting to play in a lower-pressure, more social environment
The aim is to provide an enjoyable introduction to basketball and encourage participants to continue into the Summer competition.
To maintain a suitable level of competition:
These experienced players are encouraged to mentor newer players or simply enjoy playing with friends and family who are new to the game.
Teams may include a maximum of two A or B Grade players.
What happens if there aren’t enough registrations for my competition?
As we’re introducing several new competitions, participation numbers are difficult to predict.
If registrations are low, we may:
- Combine divisions
- Adjust the competition format
- Introduce handicaps where appropriate (for example, in 3×3 competitions)
- Cancel a competition if it cannot operate successfully
If your competition is affected, we will contact all registered participants before the program begins.
Will there be finals?
We will aim to hold finals for the 3×3 competitions during the final week, depending on team numbers and the competition format.
Once registrations close and the draw is released, you’ll know whether finals will be included.
The following competitions are intended to be social and will not have finals:
- Walking Basketball
- Mixed/Social Basketball
- Over 40’s Basketball
- D Grade Competitions
Skills Events
Registration for Skills Events will take place on the night to reduce administration through PlayHQ.
Participants should arrive 20 minutes before the event begins to register.
Payment can be made by:
- Cash
- Card
After registering, you’ll receive a competitor number and complete each event in order while officials and volunteers record scores and times.
Depending on participant numbers, finals may also be conducted.
Come & Try – Under 8 & Under 10
Following the strong growth of our Under 8 and Under 10 competitions, we’d love to introduce even more young players to basketball.
One of our goals is to establish a dedicated girls’ competition for the upcoming Summer season.
This Come & Try session is aimed at:
- Children who have never played before
- Families wanting to see what basketball is all about
- Friends of existing players
We encourage current participants to bring a friend along and help introduce someone new to the sport.
Fees
We’ve worked hard to keep participation fees as affordable as possible, similar to our reduced Winter season fees.
Registration fees cover:
- Court hire
- Officials
- General operating expenses
