Important Info for Coaches and Players Ahead of Winter Season

Sorting out jerseys!

At the start of the season we know some swapping of jerseys will need to occur.

Coaches and parents are asked to coordinate between themselves to make sure all players have a jersey before their first game.

If you are changing teams and haven’t already handed your old jersey back to the coach, please bring it with you to your first game. You’ll be able to leave your old jersey at the table at the entrance to the stadium.

If you need to access jerseys from the basketball office at the BARC, please plan to give yourself plenty of time before your game.

BDABA Committee members will be at the BARC from 3:30pm on Tuesday to make available whatever jerseys are there.

Under 10s and 12s: Maximum Player Points Per Game – 15

This season we’re bringing in a cap on how many points an individual player in Under 10s and 12s can score in a game – 15 points.

The goal here is obviously to encourage teamwork and give all players an opportunity to contribute.

This rule will be enforced by the parent scorers – not the referees.

If a player who has already scored their limit of points scores another basket, the ball will be inbounded by the other team as usual, the only difference being the basket will not count toward the individual or team score.

The player does not have to stop playing – they just can’t score any more points.

If a player has scored 14 points and scores a 2-point basket, those points will count and player will finish with 16 points. The same applies if player has scored 14 points and makes 2 free throws.

As parents and carers you play an important role in making sure your young player understands this new rule and its purpose.

We’ll review the impact of this new rule after a few weeks and make changes if needed.

Clarifying adjusted foul line

The previous BDABA competition by-laws left it up to the discretion of referees as to where U12s would shoot free throws from.

This was not ideal for refs, and created uncertainty for players and coaches.

PREVIOUS BY-LAW ON FOUL LINE:

“Players in these competitions shoot from an adjusted foul line closer to the ring (the blue line marked in the key.) Referees can use this rule in the U12s competition at their discretion.”

NEW BY-LAW ON FOUL LINE:

“Players in T10, U10, U12 and U13 shoot from an adjusted foul line closer to the ring (the blue line marked in the key).”

Players in all other comps will shoot from the regular (white) foul line.

Zone and Man-to-Man Defense

Current BDABA competition by-laws state that only players in U16s and above can play zone defense.

All other grades must play man-to-man.

We have heard from coaches that they’d like younger grades to be able to play zone, and so this will be reviewed by the committee. But the regulation as written above stands for the moment.

If a referee suspects zone defense is being played in grades below U16s, a warning will be issued, followed by technical foul on the coach if it persists.

Grading

Teams will be evaluated and changes made after 3 weeks of play if necessary to keep competitions even and balanced.
